FORCES IN INDIA
BRITAIN’S INTERIM PLAN FOR CHANGES LONDON, February 13. According to the military correspondent of the Yorkshire Post, the armed forces of India are to come under the direction of a combined general staff. “The first step,” he says, “is to revive the war-time title of supreme commander-in-chief. It will be borne by General Sir Claude Auchinleck, who will in future be the sole military authority for the land, air, and sea forces in India. “The combined staff will be at Delhi and it will be in committee form for advice to the supreme commander on operations, planning, and intelligence. The principal advisory committee will be the three chiefs of staff of the services, acting in committee. The land and air forces will combine their administration services under Air Marshal Sir Thomas Elmhirst. “The Navy will be less in evidence, as the Admiralty will not be furnishing personnel for the Indian Fleet in future. The arrangement is temporary, pending the withdrawal of the British Army, but it may last for three years. By that time the a/rned , forces will be well under way to full Indianisation.”
