BITTER RESENTMENT

JEWS AND REFUGEES FOR AUSTRALIA SYNDEY, February 14. Australian Jewry bitterly resented the way in which all refugees were being classed as Jews, said Mr. IVL S. Symonds, chairman of the executive council of Australian Jewry, to-day. • He said that during the last 18 months only 1052 bona fide Jewish refugees had arrived in Australia. Nothing was said of refugees of other denominations, some of whom falsely claimed to be Jews. As the Jews in Europe had suffered most at the hands of the Nazis, they naturally formed the bulk of the refugees to whom landing permits had been granted on humanitarian and not religious grounds. . ._ . Nearly 10,000 more people of British stock left Australia than ax lived during the first 11 months of last yeai, says a message from Canberra. Departures totalled 34,273 while aruyals numbered only 24,551. The departure figures were abnormally high, because of the exodus of Australian girls marrying British and American seivicemen. During the same period, 5852 aliens arrived and 11,080 left Australia, but the departures included many aliens who took refuge in Australia during the war, whereas many of the arrivals are believed to be permanent migrants.
