TOBACCO SUPPLY
SHIPMENT MAY BE DELAYED AT WELLINGTON GREYMOUTHSHORTAGE The tobacco and cigarette supplies expected to arrive in Greymouth early next week may be delayed on account of stormy weather at Wellington. Greymouth’s tobacco quota, it is understood, was part of 50 tons of cargo to be loaded on to the Poolta at Wellington and landed at Greymouth on Monday, but bad weather prevented a start being made with loading operations yesterday and advice was received this morning that the vessel would probably sail without the cargo. In that event, the tobacco may be brought to Greymouth by the Karri which is not due until Thursday, and even if the vessel arrives on schedule, the supply will not be available to the public until the following week. In the meantime, the shortage has, reached an acute stage at Greymouth. There was a long queue outside at least one chain store last evening.
