Australia would, on present estimates, nui a 40,000 complete houses in the calendar year of 1948. This was stated officially after yesterday’s session of the Commonwealth State Housing Conference. The aim for the 12 months ended next June was 42,000 houses under construction. These would include from 14,000 to 15,000 Government houses and the rest privately built. Although the agreement was primarily a rental one, all the Governments hoped eventually that many tenants would buy their dwellings. In no circumstances, however, would a tenant be forced either to purchase or vacate his dwelling for a purchaser. A good tenant could occupy his house for life.—Canberra, Feb. 14.
