Old Mayoral Chain
' When a Mayor of Auckland appears at a regular meeting of the City Council or at a civic reception he wears a robe that is nearly halt a century old and a solid gold chain the links of which record the names of the mayors who have served Auckland since the latter part of last century. The mayoral chain, whicn is now more than a pound weight of gold, was begun by Mr. J. H. Upton, who was Mayor m 1890 and 1891. He presented the first link, and the practice of adding links, at a cost of about £lO each, has been followed by successive mayors on relinquishing office. There are now--22 links, in the form of small rectangular plaques, each bearing the name of a mayor and the period for which, he held office.
