BOWLING F. White Still In Singles

Runanga .Player Ai Title , Tournament (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 6. Only one former champion, W. C. Franks (Balmoral), who has one life, remains in the New Zealand championship singles at the Dominion bowling tournament. In play to-day three previous champions, J. M. Squire (Hawera), F. Livingstone (Onehunga), and W. D. Bennett (Hastings), were eliminated. Three two-lifers and 17 one-lifers will contest the final day’s play on Saturday. The two-lifers are T. T. Skoglund (Otahuhu), W. Freeth (Matai), and J. P. Buchan (Balmacewan). Prominent among the one-lifers still in are F. White (Runanga), skip of last year’s champion four, J. M. Giles (United), F. G. Hazlewood (Lyall Bay), and S. Vella (Onehunga), who finished in the first five last year. The remaining onelifers are C. H. Clinkard (St. John’s), E. P. Exelby (Frankton Junction), E. E. Somervell (Poverty Bay), M. Marsack (Ponsonby), L. G. Goodacre (Napier), W. Smee (Okato), T. W. Gee (Hutt), H. G. Kingsland (Nelson), A. Murdoch (Otahuhu), T. Anton (Helensville), I. B. Evans (Omarunui), and T. R. Hindle (Balmacewan). Of the 620 bowlers who started in the singles on Tuesday, 375 were eliminated that night. Play in Pairs. The second day’s play in the pairs will take place to-morrow and if the weather is favourable the 390 pairs remaining will have been reduced to eight two-lifers and 48 one-lifers bj r to-morrow night. Two-lifers will play on the Thorndon green and onelifers on the Karori, Hataitai, and Hutt greens. When Squire met W. J. Cogswell (Darfield) in the singles this afternoon, the latter player quietly found touch and established a commanding lead which he maintained throughout the match. Splendid driving contributed to Gee’s victory by one point over T. L. Williams (Paeroa). In the fourth round he killed several heads when badly placed. Playing most consistently, W. Freeth (Maitai) led 14-7 on the fifteenth end against J. M. Giles (United). An unfortunate trail by Giles on the next end gave his opponent four, making the scores 18-7. Freeth failed to score on the next four ends, the score standing at 18-15 in his favour. When the final began Giles, requiring four to win and three to be equal, secured two. E. P. Exelby (Frankton Junction) lost his first life to Skoglund in the fourth round. Skoglund established a lead and held it throughout. White Defeats Armstrong. F. White, skip of the champion Runanga four last year, beat his No. 3, J. Armstrong, 17-16, on the Khandallah green in the third round. At half-way the scores were 8 each. The match continued to be close. White got one on the nineteenth end and Armstrong two, making the scores 16-15 for Armstrong on the twentieth end. In a thrilling finish, White secured two heads in the final end to win by one point. In the fourth round, White met T. H. Hale (Takapuna). They were 7-all on the tenth, 9-all in the thirteenth, and 10-all on the fifteenth. Hale got one more on the sixteenth, and White two on the seventeenth. A four by White on the eighteenth virtually settled the issue. White led 16- on the twentieth. On the last head, White drew on the kitty. Hale put up fast ones but failed to disturb the bowls, White winning by 17-

F. Hazlewood (Lyall Bay) had a hard tussle with W. M. Pepper (St. Johns) in the third round, but earned his one-point win. Livingstone won his first match of the day comfortably, but lost his remaining two lives in successive games, both being keenly contested. A Close Contest. T. L. Arnott (Palmerston North), a member of the New Zealand Bowling Council, had a close contest with T. G. Fox (Christchurch), whom he beat after an extra end, 16-15. In the next round he met W. C. Franks (Balmoral) and led him 8-2 at the fifth end. They were 11-all on the twelfth and 16-all on the eighteenth. Franks put on a three and a two, making him 21 to 17. J. R. Smith (Christchurch) was beaten by A. Glengarry (Wanganui). Glengarry passed Smith for the first time on the thirteenth, and went on to win by 18-13. Glengarry played splendid bowls and displayed a fighting spirit. In his match with Franks, Glengarry frequently failed to reach the kitty. Franks’s drawing and superior delivery enabled him to win by 21-9. J. F. Hosking (Parnell), who has an injured knee, withdrew from-play.

Strongly-Favoured Pairs Win Again (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 7. The fine weather continued to-day for the national bowling tournament. The pairs were continued and after to-day eight two-lifers and 48 onelifers will remain. Once again most of the strongly favoured teams were successful. One pair whose play is attracting attention comprises Manning and Benson (Balmoral), who were in brilliant form this morning. The Seatoun team of Burd and Barrow, who were runners-up last year, retained their two lives, as also did George and Livingstone (Onehunga), who had an easy win. Hammond and Pavitt (Fitzroy) are another strong combination who will be hard to dispose of, but the issue is still too open for likely winners to be sorted out.
