LAST OFFICIAL ACT.— As his last official act as United States Secretary of State, Mr. James F. Byrnes, seated, signs the formal peace treaties with Italy, Hungary, Rumania and Bulgaria. At left is Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg, of Michigan, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, and at right is Senator Tom Connally (Democrat), of Texas, who assisted Mr. Byrnes in the work of forging the peace. Mr. Byrnes has been replaced by General George C. Marshall.
