LORRY OVER BANK

COLLISION ON HIGHWAY. AT WALLSEND DRIVER IN HOSPITAL Following a collision with a Railways Road Services omnibus on the main highway at Wailsend early last evening, a motor lorry loaded with empty cordial and aerated water bottles, mounted the footpath on the river side of the road and careered down the steep bank almost to the Wallsend railway station. Fortunately, the lorry remained upright after leaving the road and the driver, although admitted to the Grey Hospital, escaped serious injury. He was Walter Glen, 42, married, of Clifford street, Cobden, an employee of Messrs Boustridge and Hall, cordial manufacturers, of Greymouth. Severe Impact. The lorry driven by Glen was returning from Blackball and district and when;passing through Wallsend it came into collision with the omnibus which was being turned on the main highway. With the impact, the rear luggage compartment of the bus was sheered off and the lorry was forcup over the footpath and ran down the bank on the river side. The bodywork of the lorry was damaged and the loss of bottles, of which there was a full load on the tray, was severe. The majority of the bottles were empty. After the accident Glen, who .was suffering from shock and abrasions, was attended by Dr. H. Schmidt of Brunnerton, and was later admitted to the Grey Hospital. His condition to-day was reported to be satisfactory. Cyclist Injured. A cyclist, Edward Benjamin Ferguson, aged 15 years, of 133 Preston road, Greymouth, was injured in an accident in Mawhera Quay yesteidaj afternoon. He came into collision with a. motor-car driven by Mr. John Ryan senr., of Rotomanu, and .was knocked from his cycle. He received an injury to a knee which required medical attention. The bodywork of a new model coupe motor car was extensively damaged in an accident on the Otira Gorge road on Wednesday. Owned and driven by a Canterbury motorist, the car collided with a bank and additional damage was done when the impact brought down debris off the bank.
