Outright Victory For Otago

Wellington Batsmen Fail Badly (P.A.) DUNEDIN, Feb. 3. The Plunket Shield matcn batweeh Otago and Wellington at Carisbrook ended unexpectedly to-day in a win for Otago by seven wickets. In response to Wellington’s first-innings total of 202, Otago, which had lost eight wickets for 280 on Saturday, , carried its score to 285, and then dis- ’ missed Wellington for 111 runs. Left with 29 runs to score, Otago secured them for the loss of three wickets. The wicket had been affected by the previous day’s rain, but not to the extent that the earlier Wellington batsmen made it appear in their second innings, or enough to account for the fall of the first six wickets for 54 runs. The foothold was not' too secure, but the Otago bowlers were not greatly handicapped, even before the luncheon adjournment, after which the wicket played perfectly. It must be concluded that poor" batting played some part in the Wellington collapse against bowling which was consistently steady. In spite of his over-cautious attitude during the first couple of hours, Tindill deserved praise for his grim fighting knock for 47 not out. As soon as he realised that there was no danger lurking in the pitch he played good, free cricket. Robinson came out with the best figures for Otago. He flighted the ball well and had four batsmen caught at a cost of 45. runs, six of his 24 completed overs being maidens. Overton in 13 overs took two wickets for 16 runs, bowling with vim. The Otago fielding was again keen and Gallaway did fine work in taking six catches during the match. Scores: — WELLINGTON.* First innings 202 Second Innings. S. A. McVicar, b Roberts .. .. 4 E. Auckland Wins Plunket Shield Auckland, three times winner of the Plunket Shield in the seasons before the series was abandoned for the duration of the war, has regained the trophy, which last season was won by Canterbury. Until the finish of the match between Wellington and Otago, at Dunedin yesterday, the final destination of the shield for the 1946-47 season was in doubt, because an outright win for Wellington would have placed that province in the lead. However, 'Otago won outright. Eight points were awarded for an outright win, four for a win on the first innings and two for a loss on the first innings. Points gained were: Auckland, two outright wins and one loss on first innings, 18; Wellington, one outright win, one win on first innings, one outright loss, 12; Otago, one outright win, one loss on first innings, one outright loss, 10; Canterbury, one win on first innings, two outright losses, 4.
