HOKITIKA EASTER SPORTS MEETING
BOROUGH COUNCIL APPROVES ' PROPOSAL (0.C.) HOKITIKA, Jan. 15. The Hokitika Borough Council at its monthly meeting decided to support a proposal that a sports meeting should be held at Easter, the proceeds to be used in improving Cass Square. A deputation consisting of Messrs. E. W. Heenan, P. Kortegast, and C. Schroder waited on the council in connection with the matter. It was suggested that a joint committee be set up to carry out the improvements to the square. The council decided that its reserves committee, with Cr. Havill, should confer with the sports committee. The Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock, presided. Also present were Crs. C. Caliari, A. C. Armstrong, W. H. Stopforth, H. _C. Peart, D. Pettigrew, S. G. Havill, S. G. Roberts, and L. S. Ross. • Tar Sealing Work. The Resident Engineer, Railways Department, Greymouth, wrote asking the council’s estimate' for the tarsealing of Railway street, from Weld to Stafford streets. It was decided to suggest to the department that, in view of the council’s own programme, that the Highways Board or Public Works Department be aslced to do the work. Permission was granted for the use of Cass Square for the following Grey district picnics:—Brunner, State Mines, and Blackball. Mr. R. J. Gamboni was appointed to the position of sexton and Mr. H. Broadbent as labourer, there being three and four applicants respectively. Mr. D. Stevenson was appointed borough building inspector. The resignations of Messrs. C. B. Atkinson and G. F. Brown from the council’s staff were accepted. The acting director of the Canterbury Museum wrote stating that the museum’s taxidermist would be in Hokitika this month and would select and pack the natural history specimens, such as mounted birds, ; .and regarding the mineral specimens • that the acting director and Dr. B. Mason would be in Hokitika not later , than February and would go into the < matter of the rest of the exhibits ’ available. —Received and' approved. •> An application from W. H. Stop- t forth, Ltd., for permission to erect a ] bicycle stand in front of their shop premises in Revell street was granted.
