ATOMIC ENERGY

COMMISSION MEMBER RESIGNS r NEW YORK, January 4. Mr. Bernard Baruch, the American representative pn the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission, has resigned. His staff resigned with him. Mr. Baruch, who advised the United States to continue, making atomic bombs and to maintain its atomic secrets until the completion of a treaty for international control, said it was unnecessary for him to remain on the commission because Senator Austin, an American member of the Security Council, could look after the United States interests in the world control of atomic energy. In a letter to Mr. Truman, Mr. Baruch said there was no reason why the United States should not continue the manufacture of atomic bombs. Russia has urged that the atomic bombs should be outlawed immediately.

Mr. Truman paid a tribute to Mr. Baruch’s skill and patience in presenting the American proposals.
