AMERICAN FUNDS

Appeal for Palestine Terrorists BRITAIN’S CONCERN

(Recd. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, January 6. Britain has again directed the attention of the United States State Department to the appearance in American newspapers of advertisements soliciting funds for terrorists in Palestine, says Reuter’s diplomatic correspondent. The British Ambassador, Lord Inverchapel, discussed the matter with Mr. Byrnes dining the week-end. ' The correspondent soys that, recent information suggests that the terrorists are buying arms with American funds. The advertisements emphasise that contributions are free of income tax. The British Commander-in-Chief, Middle East, Gcneial. Sir Alan Cunningham, continued his consultations with the Under-Secretary for Colonies, Mr. A. Creech-Jones. Reuter s savs it is understood that they did not discuss the imposition of martial law in Palestine as had been suggested m some quarters, but continued the discussion, begun when Field-Marshal Lord Montgomery was present, of energetic military action to be taken under the political direction oil the High Commissioner, should it be necessary to counter a revival of terrorism.

Reuter’s Paris correspondent says that Mr. Peter Bergson, chairman of the Hebrew Committee of National Liberation, said the committee hoped next- month to proclaim a declaration of independence for Palestine and establish a Government which could pfesent the Palestine problem to the United Nations Court. The committee would ask for a decision on “Britain’s occupation of Palestine under an expired mandate.” Future sessions of the London conference were doomed to failure. Britain, as a major disputant, was not eligible to sponsor conferences, but should meet the Jews and Arabs on an equal footing in a conference called by France or the United States. Two men smashed two panes of Mass, gas mantles and a notice board at the synagogue in Bayswater last night. Several windows were broken at the Willesden synagogue during the week-end. The Daily Express says that Superintendent Kalman Cohen, who left Palestine because of threats, is reported to be in a London nursing home having a bullet removed from his leg.
