KEY APPOINTMENTS WASHINGTON, Jan. 4. The Republican and Democrat parties, at pre-sessional meetings, chose the following key positions in the new Congress—Senate President and Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Arthur Vandenburg (Republican); Republican leader, Senator Wallace White; Democratic leader, Senator Alben Barkley. Among the Senate committee chairmen appointed (all Republican) are—Armed services, Senator Chan Gurney; Interstate and Foreign Commerce, Senator Wallace White; Appropriations, Senator Styles Bridges; Labour and public Welfare, Senator Robert Taft. ’ House of Representatives appointments are: Speaker, Mr Joseph Martin; Leaders, Messrs Charles Hallock (Republicans) and Sam Reyburn (Democrats). Among the House of Representatives committee chairmen (all Republicans) are—Armed Services, Mr Walter Andrews: Education and Labour, Mr Fred Hartley; Foreign Affairs, Mr Charles Eaton; Interstate and Foreign Commerce, Mr Charles Wolverton.
