Application to hold the British Empire Games in Christchurch in 1950 has been made to the New Zealand Olympic and Empire Games Federation by the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. A .proposal to hold the Games to coincide with the centennial celebrations in Christchurch has been discussed on several occasions recently,
but this is the first move to put the application through official channels. It is reported that the New Zealarid Federation will refer the request to the British Empire Games headquarters in London. The problem of accommodating as many as 500 visiting athletes and officials was discussed at a meeting of delegates frorii sports bodies in Christchurch this week., The general opinion of the delegates was that the 'necessary accommodation could be provided without difficulty.
London Tube Accident. The day after a new tube extension came into operation beyond Liverpool street an accident jammed the tunnel with wreckage and forced the suspension of services. There were no passengers in either train, but one of the crew in the driver’s compartment is dead. Four were injured when one train crashed into the rear of a. stationary train. The rescuers had to use axes and acetylene torches to cut their way coach-by-coach through the train to the injured men.—Londdn, December 5.
