SPORTING SIGNAL OFFICER WILL APPEAL AGAIN

Chance for Double

Cross

The Southlander, Signal; Officer, in spite of his 9.1, will again be strongly fancied in . the principal event to be run at Riccarton on Saturday, the Fendalton handicap. He put up an outstanding performance to win the Metropolitan Handicap last week, for he was the last to leave the barrier and then made nearly all his running on the outside of the field. Thornbridge, who gave him most trouble last week is not in.the field for the Fendalton Handicap, but Hormuz, who was finishing on into third place behind Signal Officer and Thornbridge, will be a candidate. Hormuz is likely to be one of the better fancied division.

Piccolo is another of last Saturday’s prominent runners who will again oppose Signal Officer, and a newcomer to the field will be Double Cross, who won the Riccarton Handicap of nine furlongs attractively on the first day and then ran a good fourth behind Lexia, Master Dash 'and Red Pickle over the mile of the Jockey Club Handicap last week. In fact, Double Cross makes strong appeal.

Signal Officer, Double Cross and Hormuz will probably dispute favouritism on the day.

Winners at Avondale.

Lady Foxbridge is improving with every race and her latest outing in the King George Handicap at Avondale on Saturday saw her score very easily from a useful field, although one or two fancied runners failed to give even a glimpse of their best form. Lady Foxbridge scored too convincingly for any excuses to be made for her opponents. Sleepy Fox added yet another success to his growing list of sprint successes. He was never in danger* of defeat in the Sheriff Handicap, although Prince Revel was going much faster at the post than anything else in the race to get within almost a length of the winner.
