“THE KEY TO PEACE”
GREATER OUTPUT OF COAL
NEEDED
LONDON, Dec., 2.
“Coal is the key to peace. If we exported 30,000,000 tons to Europe as we did before the war Europe would give us as great a welcome as she did on D Day. Factories and transport would hum and Europe would be able to send us the goods we need,” said the Lord President of the Council (Mr. Herbert Morrison),, in a speech at Northumberland. He added that coal mines .would be nationalised on January 1, 1.947, and that would give Britain at long last a real chance to get the industry managed properMr. Morrison .said that none of the comprehensive plans for technical reorganisation and improved conditions could be put into’ effect unless the output of coal was raised immediately. Shortage of-coal was not merely a short-term calamity, but threatened permanent austerity. /
