Governor-General Pays Last Tribute

A gesture which raised the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg even higher in the esteem of former servicemen was made by him yesterday afternoon. At his express request his car was driven along Tainui Street to a point where the funeral procession of Mr. J. JCrooks, the late vice-president of the Greymouth branch of the R.S.A., was to pass. Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg left the car and His Excellency stood at the salute as the cortege passed. Subsequent references among R.S.A. members to this simple tribute made it clear that Str Bernard’s action was one which would not soon be forgotten.
