NEW MILL PLANNED

TIMBER AREA NEAR REEFTON ACCESS DIFFICULTIES • [SPECIAL* REPORTER] REEFTON, Nov. 22. According to*information given to the Inangahua County Council by one of the principals of the company, an extensive area of bush on the west bank of the Inangahua river, near Stony creek, is shortly to be milled and the development work will include the erection of a private bridge over

the river, at a cost of over £2OOO. Mr. C. Chandler waited upon the council at its meeting yesterday, on behalf of the Landing Sawmilling Company and J. M. Bunt and Co. Ltd., Greymouth, with a request that the council should assist the company to obtain access to the new area and grant permission for the erection of the bridge. . It was proposed to shift the Landing mill plant to the new site, said Mr. Chandler. The company was fairly financial and wanted permission to erect a bridge 210 feet long over the river, as soon as the access route was finally determined. Export Licence Sought. A modern mill would be erected, with a capacity of 10,000 superficial feet a day, and it was hoped to commence operations early in the New Year. The company was seeking a licence to export silver be’ech to Australia and thought that it might get it. The company would be pleased to have any assistance from the council in regard to access and the construction of the bridge, which would cost in the vicinity of £2OOO. In reply to questions by Cr. C. Coxall, Mr. Chandler said the company did not wish to disclose the life of the bush, but it proposed to be there at least 10 years. The mill would cost £3OOO and the bridge £2OOO, which was an indication. Cr. F. W. Archpr said that he thought the council would give the company every encouragement, but the first thing was to get legal access, if the route crossed private property, as had been suggested.

Access to Coal Areas.

Mr. Chandler said it was thought that the bridge would give access to a large area of coal and also to Andrew’s farm, with two other small bridges. _ It was decided that the council would offer no objection to the erection of the bridge and the chairman, Cr. J. J. Coghlan, assured Mr. Chandler that the council would extend all assistance possible to the company.
