GOLF Glading Beaten in Semi-final
Surprise Win for Reilly of Hutt PALMERSTON NORTH, Nov. 1. With the amateur semi-finals as the star attractions, the New Zealand golf championships were continued in fine weather. The course was fast. W. B. Reilly beat R. H. Glading and W. G. Horne beat A. R. Kitto in the semi-finals of the amateur championship. B. M. Silk beat W. E. Jones in the final of the New Zealand Plate.. Following the open championship and the defeat of W. L. Woon (Waitikiri) in one of the greatest matches ever played at Hokowhitu, Glading was expected to be one of the finalists in the amateur championship. He was decisively beaten by Reilly, and that match—an uphill fight for Reilly —was the big feature to-day. Reilly was out in 42 and Glading in 37. On the return Reilly improved to 38, and Glading again recorded 37, leaving Glading eight up. Reilly reduced the lead to four in the first nine holes after lunch with a 36 to Glading’s 40.
Sensational Finish. The game finished sensationally on the seventeenth, where Reilly sank a 30-footer for a birdie 3. Glading, almost as far away from the hole, hit his putt and walked across to shake hands with Reilly. He was moving when his own putt, also -for 3, rolled into the hole. Reilly wanted 4 for 70. Kitto and Horne were all square at the first turn in 38, but while Kitto continued to play steadily to return 38 for the next nine, Horne played brilliantly to return a 35. Kitto was four down at the next turn. Horne with 2 up clinched the match with a splendid second to the green at the sixteenth. Results. Amateur Championship—Semi-finals. W B. Reilly (Hutt) beat R. H.
