COMMUNIST DEFENCE OF CHEFOO NANKING, October 30.. '. Government troops made four, amphibious landings near Chefoo.'and a major battle appears to be developing for this Communist base. A Peking dispatch reports. that 30,000 Communists have sailed, from. Southern Manchuria in junks to build up the Chefoo garrison. Government aeroplanes, destroyers, and gunboats are attempting to intercept the flow of reinforcements. '?•••■’ Marshal Chiang Kai-shek has instructed the Chinese people to abandon plans for celebrating his sixtieth birthday. He said the instruction did not spring from" his modesty “but in line with my principle of frugality.” The sixtieth anniversary is regarded in China as a most im* portant anniversary.
