HOKITIKA RATE CONCESSION FOR R.S.A. PROPERTY

(0.C.) HOKITIKA, Oct. 17. An application from the Hokitika branch of the Returned Services’ Association for a concession of half rates on the R.S.A. hall property was granted by the Hokitika Borough Council at its meeting last evening. The association, in its letter, pointed out that it gave the community a cheap service and its credit balance at the end of the year was very small. The R.S.A. also advised that it had received information that it is the intention of the Government to build a number of State houses in Hokitika, but that the Housing Department is having difficulty in procuring building sections due to drainage problems., The council’s co-operation in the .matter was sought, as there were 16 returned servicemen awaiting State houses, and some were in a desperate position. It was decided that the association be advised of the action which had already been taken by the council. Present at the meeting were the Mayor (Mr. A. R. Elcock), Crs. A. C. Armstrong, C. Caliari, I. J. Preston, S. G. Havill, S. G. Roberts, H. C. Peart, and D. Pettigrew. An offer was received from the Hokitika Cricket Club to provide a working-bee for attention to any work on the playing area which the council saw fit. It was decided to ask Mr. W. J. Richards to represent the council at the conference convened by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to discuss the provision of a transalpine air service linking the West Coast and Canterbury.

The Hokitika Progress League wrote requesting that the council should use all its powers to demand owners and occupiers to demolish buildings and clean sections which are a menace to public health and are retarding the progress of the town. The letter was received. The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, advised that analyses of samples of water taken from various parts of the borough water supply were satisfactory, with the exception of one, whiph was on private property and where the contamination was no doubt due to a faulty pipe. An application by Mr. P. R. Whit-:, ford to erect a suspension verandah at W.' Perry and Company’s shop, at the corne'r of Weld and Tancred streets, and also to instal 12 stormwater drains undei' the footpath, was granted. ‘
