“INCREDIBLY STUPID”
PRISONER WALKS OUT OF COURT ROOM (P A ) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 16. During the brief absence of the constable from a room in the Magistrate’s Court building to-day, Hector Glynn Peebles, aged 18, walked out, but was rearrested in the city this afternoon. Peebles was sentenced by Mr. R. Abernethy, S.M., to two years’ borstal detention on a charge of obtaining £4O from the Post Office Savings Bank by falsely representing that his name was “H. Burnett.” ■ The latter was a hut-mate of Peebles at the Public Works camp at Waipahi,. and lost several war bonds, a wristlet match, and a bank book. Peebles was previously admitted to 12 months’ probation for the theft of the bonds and watch, but denied knowledge of the bank book. He subsequently used the book; sighing the name “Burnett” to the withdrawal form.
Commenting on the accused’s escape from the court, Mr. Abernethy described the act as incredibly stupid.
