ALUMINIUM HOUSES
NEW PRODUCT OF AIRCRAFT FACTORIES OUTPUT 489 WEEKLY . [N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent.] (Rec.'lQ.3O a.m.) LONDON, October 15. Prefabricated aluminium houses are now being mass produced by five former aircraft factories. The output is at present 489 weekly and it is hoped that by February the number will reach 1200 a week. The houses are part of a temporary building programme and are costing about £1365 each. They are of the bungalow type, with two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and bathroom, and are constructed in the factory in four complete units.
They can be erected quickly. The first one on its new site at Blackpool was up in less than one hour and by the afternoon was furnished and occupied. The only bricks used are in a nineinch wall which is part of the foundations. Timber is used . for floors, doors, skirting and picture rails. An order for 34,000 houses- has been placed by the Government and, when completed next- August, the further output is expected to be sold to owner-occupiers and for export. Ample supplies of aluminium are stated to be available. About 2.6 tons are used for each house.
