CRICKET . Season to Open in November
Penally for Late Start lo Matches Cricket clubs not ready to commence play at the appointed starting time will be penalised two points this season, -while a delay of a quarter of an hour will. be treated ms a default in the event of insufficient reason. This decision was made last evening at a meeting of the management committee of the West Coast Cricket Association. Mr W. Mcates presided, and also present were Messrs J. Knowles, A. Vaughan, C. Dittman, W. McNeish and G. Sansom (secretary). Seventeen Teams It was reported that seven senior and five junior teams had been nominated with the possibility of further entries from the United club and Blackball. Five women’s teams had been formed. Members decided to convene meetings at Blackball, Ngahere and Runanga in an endeavour to form clubs in those districts.
It was decided to commence competition play on the first week-end in November. Junior and women’s matches will be commenced on Saturday, November 2, and senior matches on Sunday, November 3. Clubs were granted permission, however, to play arranged unofficial matches before the opening of the season. Length of Rounds There was a discussion on whether one or two rounds would be played in the senior competition. Consideration of a suggestion that one round be played for a start and at its conclusion the teams be divided into senior A and B competitions, in which two-day games will be played, was held over until the next meeting. After discussing whether matches should be commenced at 10.30 or 1.30 p.m., the committee decided to circularise clubs seeking their views on
the subject. The Marist Cricket Club, writing in connection with the levy to be imposed on players on Saturdays, asked whether these contributions were to be devoted to the cost of operating the mower. —It was stated that the fund would not be specifically for the mower, but would be used to improve the finances of the association. . The question of a levy of 6d on Saturday players would be held m abeyance by the committee until business-firm teams and women s clubs had commenced play. It was suggested that a flat rate could be imposed on the business teams. The North Otago Cricket Association wrote indicating that it would be prepared to play the West Coast at Oamaru on January 3 and 4. Messrs Knapp and Dittman were appointed to represent the association at the meeting of the Council of Sport.
