MINOR SEMINARY
OPENING AT CHRISTCHURCH NEXT YEAR (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 16. Archbishop O’Shea of Wellington, and Bishop Liston of Auckland, Bishop Whyte of Dunedin, Bishop Lyons of Christchurch, and Bishqp O’Neill, Coadjutor of Dunedin, have announced particulars of the National Minor Seminary which is to be established in Christchurch for the education of students for the priesthood. The seminary is to be in Riccarton, where the property known as “Kilmead,” in Riccarton road, was lately acquired for the purpose. On the property stands an imposing two-storey residence built of brick- and containing spacious rooms, besides offices and
balconies.'Complete with every convenience, including central heating, and set in beautiful grounds planted with English and native trees, “Kilmead” is one of the finest homes in Canterbury. It is intended to open the seminary at the beginning of the 1947 school year and arrangements will shortly be mqde for the enrolment of students from the various parts of New Zealand. “Kilmead,” was the subject of an application for sale considered by the Urban Land Sales Committee on October 10. The purchaser was the Roman Catholic Church, in the name of the Bishop of Christchurch, Patrick Francis' Lyons. The church sought approval of the sale at £12,000. The Crown valuation was £9815, allowing for an area deduction of £2337. Sale of the property was' approved by the committee at £ 12,000.
