WOOL MARKETING

LONG TERM AGREEMENT SOUGHT PRICE STABILISATION LONDON, October 14. Dominion wool circles in London are hopeful that the inter-Govern-mental conference of wool producing and consuming countries, called by the Board of Trade will be the first step towards securing stability in the 'wool trade on a long term basis, says The Australian Associated Press' correspondent. It is understood that representative wool interests in London ■which influenced the Board of Trade’s decision to call the conference, hope the conference will be the first step towards putting a “price floor” wider wool prices, to prevent any slump after the sellers’ market ends. They hope for a stabilisation agreement at a Governmental level, the range of which could be extended- by the adherence later of governments other than those invited- to the first conference. The statistical position of wool at present is held to be favourable for the establishment of an inter-govern-mental agreement. Accumulated stocks at present held by Britain, the Dominions and America are stated not to menace the wool market. Growers have been paid'for them and they are in the hands of governments which can release them over a-period of years as the market shoWs ; capacity to absorb them.

More Sugar Wanted Increased issues of sugar during the preserving season are being sought by the Domiriion council of Commercial Gardeners, who at their conference decided to make a request- to the Government along those lines. By allowing the housewife to preserve surplus fruit and vegetables more suSr would make 1 available more fodd for thd British people, it' was stated.

Teacher in the Wrong “Why don’t you practise what you preach?” is a platitudinous query which might well have been directed at a motoring offender in the Mosgiel Court recently. He faced a . triple charge of driving without a licence, operating a vehicle without a warrant of fitness and reckless driving. The unfortunate fact of the matter.was that he happened to be a driving instructor!
