MILD SENSATION
FORMER PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSIONER PROTEST IN PARLIAMENT A sensational interruption occurred in the House of Representatives a few moments before the session of Parliament came to an end on Saturday. Members were temporarily absent from the Chamber while in the lobbies voting on the traditional mock division for the adjournment of the House when one of the few occupants of the public gallery on the floor of the house, Mr. N. P. Verschaffelt, a former Public Service commissioner, attempted to address Mr. Speaker. Rising from his seat, he leaned across the balustrade which separates the gallery from the Chamber, and said: “Mr. Speaker, I protest against the Public Service Amendment Bill. It is a disgrace. It is unworkable. It is an abortion of a Bill.” . “Unlock the doors and put nim outside,” commanded Mr. Speaker sternly. “Put him out. Put him out of the building.” Mr. Verschaffelt was then removed from the gallery by the Sergeant at Arms, Group Captain A. J. Manson, and a messenger. This had been done by the time members had returned to the Chamber from recording thenvotes, and most of them were unaware of the interruption until told of it afterwards.
