GARVEY’S CREEK MINE
ACCESS ROAD NEARING COAL FACE PROGRESS OF CONSTRUCTION The road being constructed to the new open-cast coal mine at Garvey’s creek, about seven miles from Reefton, is now approaching the coal face. Immediately the road is ready for heavy traffic, coal production will commence and consignments will be transported to the rail-head at Reefton.
It was reported to-day that one of the Public Works Department motor lorries engaged on the road construction work had actually reached the coal face. This was achieved, however, only after some rough country had been traversed. . Between three and four chains of road remain to be formed.
It is understood that a shortage of 'labour is holding up the work which is progressing slowly also on account of the rough country. This week a start will be made with the fitting of the girders to take the decking of the concrete bridge which will span a tributary of Garvey’s creek. When this is done, the remaining section of the access road to the coal-face can be metalled.
It is not. expected, however, that regular traffic will be able to use the route for a number of weeks yet. A Mines Department official said this morning that he did not think that coal production would commence until some time next year.
