CALM IN PORTUGAL

UNEASINESS THROUGHOUT WEEK-END 3000 ARRESTS REPORTED LONDON, Oct. 14. An uneasy calm prevailed throughout Portugal during the week-end following the attempt by 100 officers and men from the Oporto barracks to create an uprising, says the Daily Telegraph’s Lisbon correspondent. Although the “revolt” turned out to be a damp squib the Government is taking strong steps to prevent further attempts. Three thousand arrests have already been made in Lisbon alone. The correspondent adds that a reliable informant told him he believed the Oporto rising was premature, but a country-wide rebellion against the Salazar regime had been planned and might occur at any time, although the failure of the Oporto attempt might delay it.
