LETTERS OPENED

POSTAL EMPLOYEE SENT TO PRISON (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 16. Charged that he opened letters addressed to different persons and firms, Hector Donald Connolly, aged 36, an employee of the Post and Telegraph Department, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment by Mr. I. G. H. Sinclair, S.M., this morning. The Magistrate said it was not a, case of sudden temptation or an isolated offence, for the accused had opened a number of letters, conduct which tended to destroy public confidence in the postal Department. The offences must be regarded as somewhat serious.
