NEWSREEL BANNED
FILM OF FRENCH BATHING
COSTUMES AUSTRALIAN CENSORSHIP (Rec. 11.30 a.m.) CANBERRA, Aug. 22. The Commonwealth film censor told the Premiers’ Conference that he had banned a newsreel depicting French bathing suits for showing in Victoria, because he thought “that Victoria was not educated up to it.” During last year, he said, the production of films in Australia had been larger than anticipated, but the Commonwealth had had no power of censorship over these productions, except in Victoria. There were now suggestions that Australian departmental stores proposed building theatrettes and providing programmes to attract business. On the suggestion of Mr. Chifley, all States, except South Australia, agreed to enact uniform legislation oil the lines of the Victorian Act, which would allow Commonwealth censorship and appeal authorities to act on behalf of the States.
