BIKINI BOMB TESTS
ADMIRAL BLANDY’S SUMMARY OF RESULTS UNDER-WATER EXPLOSION (Rec. 11 a.m.) BIKINI, Aug. 11. Admiral Blandy, homeward bound after the atom bomb tests, issued an official summary showing that the under-water charge sank more than four times the tonnage sent down by die mid-air charge. Five ships were sunk in each test, but the second bomb’s toll included three capital ships and totalled 93,220 tons, compared with 22.620 tons in the first test. ■ The second test bomb, m addition, damaged four craft heavily, seven moderately and eight lightly. No damage or negligible damage was done to 50 other ships. The most damage from the under-water blast was to the hull plating, interiors or fittings. The aerial burst caused widespread topside damage. Admiral Blandy added that most ships after the second test became untenable for varying periods due to poisoning. This seemed to call for the development of counter-measures to combat radio-activity, “if atomic warfare is actually to pertain.”
