FARMERS’ APPROVAL

EXTENSION OF. ELECTRIC POWER TO ROSS MEETING OF BOARD At last evening’s meeting of the Grey Electric Power Board a letter was received from the Rotomanu branch of the Federated Farmers supporting the move of the board to extend electirc power reticulation to Ross. Present at the. meeting' were Messrs J. B. Kent (chairman), L. Downes, W. McGilchrist, J. Mulcare, W. Clayton, W. E. Pring, P. Blanchfield, J. Ryan, A. L..McKay, S. Trotter (engineer), and W. S. McClymont (secretary). The South Island Local Bodies’ Association advised that the fourth annual conference would be held at Nelson on October 23, 24 and 25, and asked that delegates be appointed and that remits should be sent in before September 20.—1 t was decided to approve of the date for submission of remits but to .advise the association that the board would not be represented. Approval by the State Hydro-elec-tric Department of the chairman’s honorarium was received from the Minister of Works (Mr Semple).

It was decided that the chairman represent the board at the conference of Electric Power Boards and Supply Authorities’ conference from September 24 to 27.

Motions of condolence were passed to Miss Brown, Mrs Mooney and Mr W. Stewart in their recent bereavements.

Engineer’s Report ■The engineer (Mr Trotter) reported as follows:— “Staff has been engaged on general maintenance of lines and outdoor sub-stations. Larger mains have been installed in GfOsson .and Johnston streets to cope with the increasing power load. Earth testing and general maintenance of earths is proceeding. The main sub-station at Blackball has been overhauled, the transformer changed to larger capacity, and an extra circuit brought out.

‘Several members of the staff have been absent on account of sickness, probably more at one time than on any previous occasion. “Since the last meeting 12 rieW applications have been received and permits issued. Twelve new consumers have been connected. Applications now total 5467 and consumers 5445. Sixty-nine permits have been issued for alterations .to existing installations; eighiy-eight extensions have been completed; six ranges have been installed for the month, and also 10 water heaters; eighteen further consumers have been connected to our supply at Reef ton. . . “The connected load now totals 32199.680 kilowatts. The units purchased for the quarter ended June 30 amounted to 7,744,000 (corresponding period of last year 7,942,000). Th6‘ demand was 5920 k.v.a. (corresponding period of last year 5878 k.v.g.) Cost of power was £ 11,153/15/(last year correspodihg quarter, £ll,OBO/5/-).” The report was adopted.
