TROOPS IN JAPAN
WIVES AND FAMILIES MAY JOIN THEM AUSTRALIAN DECISION MELBOURNE, July 17. The Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Japan, General MacArthur, has given approval for the wives and 1 ami lies of occupation troops to go to Japan, according to an announcement by the Army Department. The proposal has been agreed to by the Prime Minister, Mr. Chifley. • ~ Recommendations made by tfie Commander-in-Chief of the British Occupation Forces are that families should be sent for not less than two years free of charge and that arrangements should be made lor the provision of education, medical, dental, and canteen facilities.
NO SCHEME FOR NEW ZEALANDERS (PA) WELLINGTON, July 17. The privilege of having their wives with them in Japan is not likely to be extended to New Zealand soldiers. Members of New Zealand’s J Foice have’ enlisted for a period of only 18 months, which includes their training in New Zealand and their transport to and from Japan, so that their position is quite different from that of men in the other occupation forces who will serve up to three years in Japan. , As long as the men are away only a comparatively short period it will probably not be considered feasible to send their wives with them.
