Achilles Sails for England.

In spite of an overcast sky and threatening weather, about 2000 Aucklanders travelled to the Devonport naval base yesterday afternoon to bid farewell to the Achilles, the Royal New Zealand Navy’s most famous cruiser, which is returning to England for reversion to the Royal Navy. The Achilles sailed promptly at 4 p.m., with her long paying-off pennant streaming well over the stern. Relatives of men in the crew and friends gathered outside the dockyard gates early in the afternoon, and as soon as the gates were opened to the, public there was a rush to gain vantage points on Calliope wharf. The crew were allowed leave in the morning, and- in the afternoon they were permitted to leave the ship and mingle with their friends until within 15 minutes of sailing.—(P.A.) .
