English Trophy Matches at Auckland (P.A.). AUCKLAND, June 2. The first matches for the English Trophy were played at Blandford Park on Saturday. Otago did not enter a team and Canterbury, the holders of the trophy, thus had a bye. Auckland defeated Wellington by three goals to 1, and will play in the final against Canterbury to-morrow. The form and general combination of Canterbury make the team a formidable opponent for Auckland.

A world record of 46.2 seconds for 440 yards was established by a Jamaica-born negro, Herb McKenley, who ran for Illinois University at the Midwestern Universities’, athletic championships.—New York, June 1.
