The Herald Tribune says that Bri- [ tain is attempting to establish com- | plete economic control in Greece, j through the creation of a far-reach-ing export and import monopoly. The American State Department has despatched terse, but emphatic instructions to the American Charge d Affaires at Athens, stating that the United States is unequivocally opposed to such an economic hegemony. It is reported from Athens that the proposed monopoly would piovicc for two directors-general, one being British and one Greek. The group would have complete authority concerning all imports and exports and manufacturing, and control as to whom commodities would go. Power would actually be invested in the British director-general. The Russians have applied this system, with high success, in South-East-Europe, and especially in connection with Rumanian oil interests. The British, apparently are eager to imitate these Soviet economic projects, in spite of the earlier publicised British abhorrence of such ventures.
