THE PACIFIC FLEET

REDUCTION BY BRITAIN COLOMBO, May 30. The new Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet (Vice-Admiral Sir Denis Boyd), on his arrival at Colombo in the cruiser Sussex, said that, when he took over, the fleet would have been reduced to the strength of one cruiser squadron, one carrier squadron, a flotilal of destroyers, and escort ships. Referring to the future defence of Pacific bases, Vice-Admiral Boyd said that with the same trust and co-operation between the big Powers as during the war the problem would be satisfactorily settled. Vice-Admiral Boyd will leave next week in the aircraft-carrier Venerable for Singapore. The headquarters of the Pacific Fleet will continue to be Hong Kong, although the fleet will be partly based on Singapore.
