Maintaining the Poor
ACCORDING to the local Labour organ M this morning, the National Party’s policy is aimed at making the poor responsible for maintaining the poor, It has long been the view of New Zealand s Left Wingers that a redistribution of wealth can be brought about simply by “soaking” the rich—a policy which has certainly led to a decrease in the number o. those they choose to describe as rich and a steady decline in the incomes o . those remaining in that categorw I 1( present rate of taxation and of the upward trend in the cost of living, a c nee outcome of the Government’s “ actions—the state of affian-s winch the local Labour organ is pleased to envisage as a result only of the National Party s policy may in the near future become a reality. Unless Labour changes its waj s, the poor will most certainly soon be supporting the poor. The local Labour organ has attempted to belittle the National Party’s election policy. What it has conveniently overlooked is that only a few points of that policy have yet been announced by - i.< Holland. Common justice demands that an overall picture of the party’s case, should be awaited before judgment, is | passed: That' is, perhaps, too much to expect from the Labour press.
