FARMERS’ MEETING

ANNUAL PROVINCIAL CONFERENCE “MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE” [SPECIAL REPORTER] .HOKITIKA, May 31. “I think that we realise that you are the backbone of the country. Especially in these times of food shortages you are really the most important people in the world, although, of course, some sections would not agree.” These remarks were made by the Mayor of Hokitika, Mr. A. R-. Elcock, extending a welcome to the delegates to the annual provincial conference of the West Coast branch of the Federated Farmers of New Zealand at Hokitika to-day. Mr. Elcock referred to some of the more important remits to come before the conference and assured the delegates that in their efforts to lighten the crushing burden of hospital taxation, they would have the support of 99, if not 100, per cent, of the local bodies in any action they might take. He also mentioned the importance to the community generally of the implications of protected New Zealand industries. Mr. H. D. Beckett, of Hohonu, presided over an attendance of 32 delegates, representing the 20 branches on the West Coast. Life Member Elected.

High tribute was paid to Mr. D, B. Jellie, of Arahura, a former vicepresident, who was absent owing to ill health. Several delegates referred to his outstanding work in the interests of farmers, with particular reference to his activities in connection with the Armed Forces Appeal Board and the Primary Production Council during the war. He was elected a life-member of the federation. Occasion was also taken to extend a welcome to the new fields instructor for the Department of Agriculture, Mr. J. R. Shepherd, who, in his reply, stated that he expected next week to commence travelling the West Coast to further his duties.
