TABLE TENNIS Chainpions Give Display at Hokitika
.Defending we .11 with back-hand strokes and attacking strongly with both fore-hand and back-hand shots, Eric Boniface, a former champion, gave a first-class diplay of table tennis in exhibition matches with W. Raven, also of Wellington, at Hokitika last evening.
Managed by Mr Mitchell, the two men have been touring portion of the South Island din an effort to stimulate interest in table tennis. They played at Westport on Monday evening, but Greymouth was omitted from the itinerary because there are now no clubs functioning here. Mr Mitchell speaking at Hokitika lastevening, stated that ten years ago, there were no fewer than 28 clubs between Greymouth and Hokitika. W. Raven, who was beaten by his fellow tourist in. both games, showed excellent judgment in placing, his shots. He thus avoided having to move too quickly on his artificial leg. Despite this'handicap he played well, his strongest shot being his forehand drive. The scores in the exhibition singles matches which were won by Boniface were as follow: —First game, 21/4, 14/21, 22/20; second game, 16/21, 21/8, 21/11.
The results of other games, m which the visitors were partnered by Hokitika players, were as follow: Boniface and Raven beat Wilson and Roberts 21/10, 21/17. Boniface and Keown beat Raven and Cartner 21/-0, 21/17. Cloher and Cartner beat Roberts and Keown 21/17, 21/17. White and Luey (Greymouth) beat Groufsky and'Cloher 21/18, 21/15, Cartner and Keown beat Cloher and Groufsky 21/14, 21/13. Luey and White beat Wilson and Roberts 21/15, 21/18.
