REFUGEE COMMITTEE

JUGOSLAV DELEGATE’S MOVE DEFEATED

CONFIDENCEJIN CHAIRMAN (Rec 11.10 a.m.) LONDON, April 23 Mr. Hector McNeil, Chairman of the United Nations Refugee Committee was accorded a vote of confidence when the committee again met after the Easter recess. Jugoslavia’s delegate, Dr. Bebler at the meeting on April 18 challenged Mr McNeil’s authority to rule out a motion that a commission should be sent to certain refugee camps to investigate the position concerning the screening of collaborators and othei undesirables.” . Mr. McNeil to-day said he bore no grudge against any member of the committee, but if he were to remain as chairman he must have some authority. He asked the committee to vote whether it approved of the discussion on the Jugoslav motion, and added that if it approved he would vacate the chair. , . The roll call resulted in one vote in -favour of the discussion, 11 against and five abstentions. The committee then debated the resettlement of refugees. The French delegate, M. Bquzgqiiet, suggested the creation of a single international committee, which would not only finance and assist all refugees, but would also assume protection of refugees, both statutory and non-statutory. The debate was adjourned.
