SCHOOL HOURS

ALTERATION PROPOSED HAWKE’S BAY SUGGESTION “Country teachers have to work under many disabilities, and to these another has been added as a result of the universal closing of business premises on Saturdays,” says an editorial in the latest copy of National Education, the official journal of the New Zealand Education Institute. A report of a remit by the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, published in magazine, urged that the Education' Boards’ Conference should consider the matter of adjusting schools hours. “Other reports show that country parents are also being put to inconvenience and that the position would be q good deal easier for them if their children could be released from attending school during a portion of some school day,” continues the article.

“Clearly, therefore, a uniform plan for reorganising school hours throughout the Dominion is urgently needed. Given sympathy and goodwill, such as that expressed by the Hawke’s Bay Board, this should not be a difficult administrative undertaking. It is to be hoped ■ that the necessary action will be taken without delay.”
