HIGH TAXATION
CRIPPLING EFFECT ON OUTPUT
WORKERS’ COMPLAINT
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 18.
Commenting to-day on a message to the watersiders by Mr. H. Barnes, on his re-election as president of the New Zealand Union, Mr. W. H.,Hindle, president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand, said it was of great public interest. Mr. Barnes had pointed to the effect of the present high taxation on workers which, he said, made working to the maximum unattractive. “The Chambers of Commerce have consistently drawn the attention of the Government to this same point as it applies to industry and commerce as a whole,” he said, “but unfortunately without effect. Mr. Barnes’s message, following so soon after the Walsh report, clearly indicates that the workers are realising that production and employment cannot be increased unless some relief is given from the present heavy burden of taxation.
“In this the workers and Chambers of Commerce are on common ground and with the pressure now being brought from these two directions it is to be hoped the Government will see it cannot continue its present high taxation policy and St the same time expect full employment and high production.”
