WAR REGULATIONS
AUSTRALIA TO REVOKE ACT
CANBERRA, April 3.
The Federal Cabinet has decided to encl the National Security Act on December 31 this year, but before that date legislation will be introduced to control prices, rents, interests, and anti-inflationary controls generally. The Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley) said that the decision had been made on the recommendation of the Attor-ney-General (Dr. JI. V. Evatt) to remove uncertainty as to the end of the act. On the legal view accepted by the Curtin Government it would not end until probably six months after the final treaties for peace were signed with Germany; Italy, and Japan. This period might, however, be prolonged almost indefinitely, and Cabinet had decided that December 31 should be fixed as the terminal point. The end of the act would mean that all the network of regulations built up throughout the war would no longer have legality and the Commonwealth would again be limited to the functions defined in the Constitution without power to overrule the States on matters that came within the constitutional purview of the Stfites. ‘
