DRAUGHT BEER

SHORTAGE IN WELLINGTON HOTELS ; SHIPPING SPACE LACKING (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 21. | Supplies of draught beer in a number of Wellington hotels have, been I completely exhausted on several oc- ' casions recently. All that the licensees have been able to offer has been bottled beer. One leading hotel, which has run out of all of its draught beer stocks by Friday night for’ the last four weeks, fears it will be faced with a similar position this week. The shortage has also affected those who . have riggers and other containers filled for home consumption, as it has not been possible for many publicans to fill any containers for some time. The reasons for the shortage are several, but the most important appears to be the difficulty in obtaining

shipping to transport stocks from the south, particularly from Dunedin to Wellington. Much of the shipping normally available is at present being used to carry fodder for stock in the areas which suffered’ from drought in the North Island recently. As most of the bottled beer consumed in Wellington is brewed in the North Island, sufficient supplies are available. Hotels which normally receive supplies from the South have been able to obtain some relief from local breweries, but the demand has , been too great for them to meet all ’ requirements. |
