RUGBY FOOTBALL

CORRECT NUMBERING OF JERSEYS BLAKETOWN CLUB REMIT That all clubs be requested to arrange to have the jerseys of their players correctly numbered so that a programme could be printed for each week-end game is the purpose of a remit which the executive of the Blaketown Rugby Football Club at a meeting held last evening, approved for presentation to the annual meeting. of the West Coast Rugby Union. The appearance of teams generally was discussed and it was resolved that the correct club uniform be strictly adhered to this season. It was reported that a number of new black jerseys had been obtained, and it was decided that monograms, B.F.C. on a white background, be ordered for issue to senior and junior players. It was also recommended that no shorts other than black be worn and that socks with black and white hoops be obtained where possible.

It was decided to recommend to the annual meeting of the union that the executive this season, include all delegates nominated by clubs. It was pointed out that with only live senior clubs in the competition, the ten representatives would not form an unduly bulky executive, and this system would, besides, extend to all clubs an opportunity of expressing their views.

Applications for reinstatement to the code by five of the club’s senior players were discussed, and it was decided to write to the union seeking favourable consideration and requesting that, in the .circumstances, the usual penalty be set aside on the grounds that the club and not the players themselves would be undeservedly penalised. The standing down of the five players, it was suggested, would mean that the senior team would have to play short and this might have a detrimental effect on the competition. Disciplinary measures taken by the club itself would probably have a more beneficial effect. The question of the postponement of matches while representative matches were being played away from the Coast was held over to the next meeting, as was consideration of the question of the number of selectors. The executive committee was appointed a social committee and deputed to consider the raising of finance. AUSTRALIA INVITED TO TOUR BRITAIN (Rec. 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 22. England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales want an Australian Rugby Union team to visit the United Kingdom in the 1947-48 season. An official invitation, sent on their behalf by the secretary of the English Union, was received by the New

South Wales Union secretary. The Australian selectors are extending the inter-State programme this season as they are anxious to see as many first-class games as possible before picking the team to tour New Zealand in August and September.
