HOMMA TO DIE
GENERAL MACARTHUR CONFIRMS SENTENCE ORDERED TO FACE FIRING SQUAD TOKIO, March 21. General MacArthur has ordered the execution of General Homma after reviewing the decision of the military court at Manila. Directing Homma’s execution by firing squad, General MacArthur said that if the defendant does not deserve his fate no one in history ever did. “There can be no greater or more heinous crime than mass destruction, under the guise of military authority or military necessity, of helpless men incapable of a further contribution to war effort,” said General MacArthur. “No accused has ever been given fairer trial. “The proceedings showed that Homma lacked the basic firmness of character and moral fortitude essential to officers charged with high command. The savageries-which resulted shocked the world, have become synonyms of horror, and mark the lowest ebb of depravity of modern times.” The Associated Press points out that General MacArthur did not order General Homma to be stripped of his uniform as in the case of General Yamashita. He will therefore die a soldier’s death. The verdict is final unless President Truman intervenes.
