FOREIGN POLICY
EFFECT OF WATERSIDERS’ ACTION (Rec. 2 p.m.) CANBERRA, Mar. 22. That the Federal Government did not countenance putting observers on the relief ships taking food and other goods to the Netherlands East Indies was stated in the House of Representatives by the Minister of External Affairs, Dr. Evatt. He added that the Minister of Supply and Shipping, Senator Ashley, was trying to arrange for goods to be shipped to the Indies. Mr Spender asked for an assurance that the Australian Government, and not the Watersiders, would determine the country’s foreign policy.
A Melbourne report carries news of more cancellations of Dutch orders in favour of England and the United States. One of the largest engineering firms in Australia has dismissed 180 employees because an order by the Netherlands East Indies Government for materials needed to restore communications has been cancelled.
