PERSONAL

Mr. R. Woodhouse left for Wellington by air to-day. Mrs. Desmond O’Brien, of Auckland, is visiting Mrs. Bradshaw, Smith street.

Miss N. Williams has been appointed Town Clerk of Runanga. She succeeds Mrs. D. Hogg, who has held the position for the past four years. Miss M. K. Rodden, temporary postwoman, Chief Post Office, Greymouth, will leave to-morrow on transfer to the position of assistant at Otira. Mr. E. H. Farrelly, who, prior to serving with the army overseas, was a member of the Post and Telegraph Department’s line staff at Greymouth, will resume duties shortly at Rangiora.

Mr. R. Ewen was granted leave of absence until the end of the committee’s term at last evening’s meeting of the Runanga school committee. Mr. Ewen is to leave shortly on a visit to Tyneside, England. Sir Henry French, personal representative of the British Minister of Food (Sir Ben Smith), left .Auckland for Sydney by flying-boat this morning en route to South Africa. — (P.A.) The funeral of Mrs. Mary Margaret Brown, of Tainui street, took place this afternoon at Karoro Cemetery. The Rev. P. Kirkham conducted the services at the Holy Trinity Church and at the graveside. Mi’ Justice Northcroft, of Christchurch, is acting as president of the International Military Tribunal for Far East war crimes, while the president (Sir William Webb) is in Australia on “a routine liaison visit.” Colonel L. W. Thornton, Christchurch, has been selected to command the British Commonwealth Force’s sub-base in Tokio. In addition to his other duties, Colonel Thornton will be senior liaison officer with the headquarters of the United States forces.
